In the developed and developing countries
emphasis is given in the health care sector to the multidisciplinary
team approach to achieve successful integration into the
community for the patient. SIRC also take a holistic view
of the patient and the home environment. The core teams,
led by a medical doctor, are comprised of the patient, a
family caregiver, a representative from nursing, nursing
education, physiotherapy therapy, occupational therapy,
vocational training, equipment coordination, social services
including patient and family service counseling.

Including the family in rehabilitation
is very important. At SIRC the patients' family members
are strongly encouraged to live at SIRC during at least
part of the patient's stay and participate in therapies,
educational sessions, regular patient-family conferences
and therapeutic outings. There are also times when for therapeutic
reasons patients need an opportunity to be alone to work
on independent living skills and psychological adjustment.
Families are strongly encouraged to study educational material,
attend nursing and other educational sessions, participate
in therapy, etc. - and in general, learn as much as they
can during the initial rehabilitation process.
