THE SANGHA
The Spinal Injury Sangha Nepal is a registered not for
profit society in Nepal. Its focus is to respond to the
‘traditional’ injuries to the spinal cord which
arise in Nepal as the result of falls e.g. from cliffs,
balconies, swings. Modern- day accidents arise as traffic
volumes grow.
The society’s initial focus is to provide a rehabilitation
facility; future plans include engaging in other areas such
as public advocacy, developing evacuation procedures, and
addressing issues of patient-handling in the absence of
specialist care. Concurrently, the Sangha also seeks to
ensure that trauma centres and health posts within Nepal
are better prepared to cater for spinal cord injury (SCI).
Currently, the Sangha is collaborating with Nepal Disabled
Association, which has made the premises at Jorpati available
for the Centre. From 2008 thanks to the help of international
donations earlier this year, the new centre will be built
at a new site, 20 kilometres east of Kathmandu.
