"Helping people help themselves"
The aim of Occupational Therapy (OT) is to help
the patients carry out the Activities of Daily Living (ADL). “Occupation”
here refers to everything that individuals have to do from brushing
their teeth to driving cars, from opening the soap case to managing
their house.
Occupational Therapy works with Spinal Injury patients who face
new challenges with daily life. In order to increase the independence,
OT focuses on the functional development.
Here in SIRC, an Senior Occupational therapist works
with two assistants and often a volunteer using a wide range of
adaptive techniques and technologies. Immediately after admission,
as part of the multi disciplinary team, the occupational therapist
carries out an initial assessment. On the basis of which, treatment
and evaluation is implemented in all stages of the rehabilitation
process.
At SIRC the focus for OT is on hand function so
that patients can manipulate their surroundings for their independence.
For the patient who is physically challenged, after spinal cord
injury, we focus on activities of daily living skills such as dressing,
bathing, eating, wheelchair skills, grooming, cooking.
Through the prescription and provision of adaptive
and assistive technologies patients’ independence in their
home environment is maximized.
The OT department also facilitates vocational
and recreational activities to meet the requirements of the
comprehensive and holistic approach to rehabilitation at SIRC.
The patients enjoy the regular sporting activities and games.
