Conferences
Conferences have been a powerful advocacy method for NGOs, enabling
groups to share their voices, make contacts and influence public policy.
SIRC is a member of ASIAN SPINAL CORD NETWORK (ASCoN.) The annual
Conference is an opportunity for professionals confronting the challenge
of spinal injury to come together for sharing and learning. It brings
together many professionals from 14 countries comprising neuro- and
orthopaedic surgeons, doctors, nurses, managers, care assistants,
physio- and occupational therapists, social workers, psychologists
and peer counsellors. The conference promotes further development
of SCI services and related human resources. It gives an opportunity
for professionals to share ideas, discuss challenges in their particular
areas of work and build links for the future, particularly between
neighbouring countries and cities. The conference also provides the
opportunity for ASCoN’s Annual General Meeting and a gathering
of the ISCoS Education Committee.
IN 2005, SIRC hosted in Kathmandu, the 4th Asian Spinal Cord Network
(ASCoN) Conference, with the theme “Comprehensive Spinal Injury
Management and Innovation in Asia”.
Advocacy
Globalization has created both cross-border issues and cross-border
communities of interest. This evolution along with the appearance
of new technologies coincides with the growing importance of NGOs
in global policy making.
SIRC advocates for the rights of the disabled. In Nepal there is
need for greater access for the disabled to services and buildings
and greater awareness of spinal cord injury. SIRC achieves through
networking and participating in global conferences, and events promoting
the rights of the disabled in Nepal.
Networking
SIRC recognizes the strength of networking to enable organizations
without the most money to share their voices and exert strength
in numbers.
